Police release CCTV of vehicle detectives need to trace following serious sexual assault in Bagshot

Bagshot Sexual Assault - Surrey Police

Detectives in Surrey Heath are appealing for information from members of the public to help trace the driver and whereabouts of the vehicle shown in this CCTV image.

Surrey Police want to locate the vehicle, which is described as a Mercedes Vito van which may be a silver colour and identify the driver. The CCTV shows the van in Pembroke Broadway in Camberley just after 3am on Saturday (3 November).

Officers want to find the van and speak with the motorist in connection with an investigation into a serious sexual assault which took place in Connaught Park, off Whitmoor Road in Bagshot in the early hours of Saturday (3 November).

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference SH/12/4329.

Appeal to trace vehicle following a serious sexual assault in Bagshot

Police Vest 2Surrey Police is appealing for information from members of the public to trace a vehicle following a serious sexual assault on a 23-year-old woman in Bagshot.

The offence took place in an area of woodland in Connaught Park, off Whitmoor Road, at some point between 2.30am and 4am on Saturday, 3 November.

The victim got into a vehicle, believed to be a taxi, described as a white or light coloured people carrier with three rows of seats, which was waiting near to Camberley railway station shortly after 3am.

Following a short drive the people carrier stopped in Whitmoor Road and the victim got out of the vehicle.

A short time later she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man.

Police are keen to speak to the driver of the people carrier as they believe he may be able to provide vital information to assist with this investigation. He is described as Asian man, slim build, with dark hair and dark eyes.

Following the incident police carried out an extensive search of the local area but the vehicle and the driver have yet to be located.

Surrey Police is carrying out a thorough investigation into the incident, with officers reviewing CCTV footage in Camberley and Bagshot and conducting local house to house enquiries.

Police also cordoned off a section of Connaught Park to allow specialist officers to examine the area to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Detective Inspector Chris Goodman, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a very concerning incident where a young woman has been subjected to what must have been a terrifying attack.

“We are following up a number of lines of enquiry but it is vital we track down the white or light coloured people carrier which drove the victim to Whitmoor Road.

“The vehicle is quite distinctive and I feel certain that people who were in the centre of Camberley in the late hours of Friday night or the early hours of Saturday morning might recall seeing the people carrier parked near the train station.

“Were you driving or walking through Whitmoor Road in the early hours of Saturday morning? Did you see or hear anything out of the ordinary?

“We are working closely with Surrey Heath Safer Neighbourhood Team officers as part of our ongoing investigation into this incident and I would appeal to anyone who thinks they may know the offender or who witnessed anything suspicious to contact Surrey Police.

“Serious offences of this nature are rare in Surrey but I can assure Surrey Heath residents that we are doing everything possible to bring the offender to justice.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference SH/12/4329, or call independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Community groups urged to bid for more than £350,000

David Hodge Stroud Green

Groups have been urged to bid for a share of more than £350,000 still up for grabs for projects that make a difference to their communities.

There is £357,000 available from a fund created by Surrey County Council leader David Hodge to improve local areas.

Originally £750,000 was earmarked for the pot of cash and this has been swelled to around £813,000.

A community cafe, a meals on wheels service and a scout hall were among the first 17 projects to win cash.

The Shop at Strood Green won £50,000 towards improving its community cafe and turning disused rooms into affordable home for a local family.

First Weybridge Scout Group received £21,280 to help renovate its hall and the Friends of St Andrew’s Box Hill Jubilee Kitchen Extension got £12,675 towards delivering more meals to older people at home.

The Surrey leader’s Community Improvements Fund is being run in tandem with the Love Where You Live campaign, which aims to encourage residents to volunteer and play a more active role to improve their communities.

Mr Hodge said: “There is still £357,000 available for projects that improve local areas, make a real difference to people’s lives and help residents to independently enhance where they live and I would urge community groups to get their applications in.

“All the projects that have already won cash are great examples of the county council and residents joining together to make Surrey an even better place to live and I’m looking forward to seeing even more groups get schemes off the ground that will be of lasting benefit to neighbourhoods.”

Bids can be made for between £10,000 and £50,000. The deadline for applications is 28 September. A panel of councillors will then draw up a shortlist for Mr Hodge to consider.

More details about the fund can be found at www.surreycc.gov.uk/communityimprovementsfund

St Pauls Logo‘Race It Challenge’ For Children

A Camberley Church is hosting a free ‘Race It Challenge’ for dads, grandads, uncles and carers with their children, as part of its regular ‘who let the dads out’ event.

St Paul’s, Crawley Ridge in Camberley, are asking families to bring a plastic bottle with them to compete in the rocket racers challenge, and St Paul’s will provide the rest.

Adults can drop in and chill-out in a relaxed cafe style play area, read the newspapers and tuck in to unlimited bacon (and vegetarian) butties, tea and coffee. They also have the opportunity to join in with their children playing games, and our children’s staff will be available to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Sarah Hounslow, Children’s Worker at St Paul’s, Camberley, is responsible for the event. She says: “The who let the dads out is going to have a challenge this time. We are going to make rockets and race them and I’m sure there will be a bit of a competitive element. Games will still be out for the children to play with and as usual unlimited free bacon butties will be available for all. This is a great way to give mum a break whilst the guys chill and spend time with their children, and make it a fathers day weekend.”

The event is for under 12’s, and the fun and food starts at 9.00am until 11.00am on Saturday 16 June at St Paul’s, Crawley Ridge, Camberley, Surrey GU15 2AD. People are welcome to drop in at any time.

A leaf out of the Spanish book – Only on some things though!

SpainAs I type this blog I am at my brothers house in Spain. Sadly I am not here on holiday but that’s another story.

I used to live in Spain, it is a very sentimental place for me. For starters all my brothers live here as do my mum and dad. I met Claire here and we  got married in Gibraltar. We had our wedding reception in my brothers garden and had the most amazing honeymoon in Toledo, my favourite place in the whole world. I have countless friends here too.

All countries do things differently, and if the UK could pick and choose some of the things other countries do well we would be in much better shape. Don’t get me wrong, the Spanish really do do some things arse about face but then don’t all counties? The UK no exception.

Here are just some observations I have made over the last couple of weeks:

Fuengi Skate Park

I have noticed their free municipal leisure facilities are far superior to ours. The other day my brother and I took my nephew to a skate park in Fuengirola that knocks the socks off anything I have seen in our leafy borough or any other borough for that matter. That said it must have cost an absolute fortune.

Also while here I have had close exposure to the Spanish Health Care System. As a health care professional for the NHS I guess it is only natural that I make some observations. In the UK we will treat anyone in our hospitals, no questions asked. In Spain only people who make social security contributions will be treated. So if you have just arrived in Spain and take ill, have no insurance and have never paid income tax/social security contributions, you are in a whole lot of trouble because they will not treat you even if your illness is life threatening. While I don’t agree with this policy, I can see how it would save the Spanish government fortunes.

A couple of days ago, my brother received a letter from the local Munciple authority to inform him that €300 had been embargoed from his bank account. No explanation as to why just that it related to a matter from several years ago. When he looked into this further it transpired he had been caught speeding just at a time when he was moving house and somehow the original notification letter had either got lost or was overlooked. So the local authority have the power to simply take the fine plus non payment penalties directly from your bank account without your permission. I wonder how much per year in the  UK could be accounted for non payment of fines and that could be collected this way.

Hospital Costa del SolA friend of mine the other day was pulled over by the police for using his mobile phone while driving. He was using a bluetooth hands free device at the time but in Spain it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving even with a hands free device. He had to pay an on the spot fine of €300 or pay €600 if he could not pay there and then. Either way he also got 3 penalty points on his licence. He payed on the spot.

I am told in Spain they also have a zero tolerance policy on drink driving. If even the slightest amount of alcohol is detected from a breath test you loose your licence and receive a huge fine. If you are caught driving after a ban, you go straight to jail. The Spanish jails make the UK ones look like hotels.

When it comes to many things in the UK I think we are probably viewed as a soft touch and seeing how things are done in Spain the last couple of weeks I can see why.

Despite this, Surrey Heath is home and cant wait to get back to the community I love.

Robins Cinema, Camberley Photo blog – e-museum series

Whenever I drive past Robins Cinema on the London Road in Camberley, I do feel sad that it has been allowed to get in such a poor state.

Although I have only lived in the borough since 2003, I did spend some time in Camberley in my early 20’s as I used to have a girlfriend who’s parents lived in College Town, Sandhurst and during that time I visited Robins Cinema and watched a few films although I cant remember which ones. My wife has just reminded me that we also went to watch a movie there not long before it shut. Blimey, I know how to show a girl a good time!

I recently stumbled across some images on the internet from a group of people who are referred to as “Urban Explorers” or UE. These people have gained a bad reputation as vandals that break in and cause damage under the guise of UE. I spoke to one UE member who contributed to this photo blog and he said “The truth is we respect and admire these old places”.
